Position: Counselor Responsible To: Unit Leader
Qualifications:
1. At least 18 years of age at the opening of the camping season.
2. One year of college education or the equivalent in experience significant for camping.
3. Emotional maturity, good moral character, and integrity
4. Enjoyment of out-of-doors living.
5. An understanding and liking of children.
6. An understanding and acceptance of the fundamental aims and objectives of the YMCA in general and of YMCA Camp Mohawk.
7. Able to walk one mile over rough terrain in under 14 minutes without any assistance.
8. Able to lift a 14” X 18” X 36” trunk weighing 40 pounds to a height of 48”.
General Responsibilities:
1. Leadership and guidance of a cabin of 8-10 campers in the program established by the camp and the Unit Leader.
2. Participation in planning, organizing, executing, and evaluating camp programs.
Specific Responsibilities:
1. Primary responsibility for the health and safety of each member of the cabin group.
2. Interpret to and supervise the health and safety regulations for members of the cabin group.
3. Supervise and/or assist daily cabin activities, rest period, meals, capers, etc.
4. Guide the group in participation in group, unit, and camp wide activities.
5. Work closely with the Unit Leader in coordinating activities.
6. Hold cabin discussions each evening.
7. Prepare reports as necessary.
8. Complete daily health form for review by camp nurse.
9. Complete Fun Factor forms daily.
10. Attend and participate in all unit and all camp staff meetings.
11. Supervise Junior Counselor or CIT, if applicable.
12. Instruct in one or more of the activity areas as arranged by the Program Director
A counselor is responsible for developing a cohesive cabin group and for the health and welfare of all campers in that group. Special cabin activities, scheduling, and camper counseling are all part of the Counselor’s responsibilities. The counselor works closely with her Co Counselor to develop a “team” approach to cabin leadership. Where appropriate providing guidance and training for Junior Counselors. She also works with the Unit Leader to create a strong and enthusiastic unit program.
The counselor position is the most important aspect of a good camp program. Yours is the primary position in developing a safe, enthusiastic, spirit-filled camp. Your first concerns must be for the campers, as their needs dictate your actions. Special attention must be given to new campers so they will fell at home quickly while old campers need that extra spark to keep camp new and exciting. Listen to your campers as you work together to select classes, activities, and special programs.
