Position: Unit Leader                 Responsible To:           Associate Director

 

Qualifications:

1.       At least 21 years of age at the opening of the camp season.

2.       Experience as a camp counselor.

3.       Ability to supervise peers.

4.       Maturity, good moral character, and integrity.

5.       An understanding of and liking of children.

6.       An understanding and acceptance of the fundamental aims and objectives of the YMCA in general and of YMCA Camp Mohawk.

7.       Able to walk one mile over rough terrain in under 14 minutes without any assistance.

8.       Able to lift a 14” X 18” X 36” trunk weighing 40 pounds to a height of 48”.

 

General Responsibilities

1.       Assist with the leadership of Staff Training.

2.       Supervise and support unit staff, including preparation of evaluations.

3.       Plan and carry out unit programs.

4.       Teach in assigned activity area.

5.       Help to maintain camp spirit.

6.       Cabin coverage on Counselors days off.

 

Specific Responsibilities:

Within the limits of approved policies, programs, budgets and procedures the Unit Head is responsible for and has the authority to fulfill the duties listed below. The Unit Leader may delegate portions of this responsibility, together with necessary authority for their fulfillment, but may not delegate or relinquish overall accountability for results.

1.       Know each camper as an individual.

2.       Create a meaningful experience for Unit Campers and staff.

3.       Acknowledge accomplishment on the part of campers and staff. 

4.       Keep staff members informed of progress and results of assigned work, unit programs and all camp activities.

5.       Discuss each counselor’s cabin activity plans daily: be sure planned activities provide variety, safe, fun, and are suitable for the age group. Attend cabin activities daily to be aware of what transpires. Handle cabin devotions in a like manner.

6.       Insist that reports & lesson plans from counselors are accurately completed and on time.  See that your own paperwork is handled in a like manner.

7.       Avoid dictatorial methods but be firm if necessary in your relationship with counselors and campers. Give guidance to counselors and give suggestions when needed. Avoid negative criticism whenever possible.

8.       Develop and implement programs and plans for Unit Activities.

9.       On opening and closing days of each session, welcome campers and meet as many parents as possible.

10.   Provide ample opportunity for each counselor to develop her leadership potential and initiative. Discuss with them their program suggestions and incorporate their helpful ideas into the program.

11.   Provide sufficient leadership by establishing flexible schedules for on duty in unit

12.   Schedule Unit O.D.’s for each day and sees to it that the O.D. knows his/her responsibility.

13.   Inspect each cabin and unit areas daily. ULs are responsible for the cleanliness of their cabins and unit.

14.   Be alert for faulty equipment within the unit and eliminate hazards that might cause accidents, see that fire extinguishers are full at all times, report all maintenance needs to the camp office in writing.

15.   Attend daily Administrative Staff Team meetings.

16.   Communicate with the Program Director any concerns regarding program, staff or campers.

17.   Review Fun Factors as necessary (at least every three days).

18.   Hold regular staff meetings.

 

The Unit Leader is responsible for the co-ordination of unit programs including special evening programs and overnights. In addition, the UL will work with the Unit staff to help create a cohesive staff-camper group.  She will help handle unit problems in the appropriate manner. The Unit Head will inform the Associate Director of any problems or concerns with the unit or request assistance if necessary.  Planning here often is on a short notice basis due to weather changes and camper interest. Therefore flexibility is important. The UL should work with the campers and staff to plan unit activities.
