Position: Waterfront Director                  Responsible To: Camp Director

 

Qualifications:

            1. Minimum age 21 by June 1st.

          2. An understanding and acceptance of the fundamental aims and purposes of YMCA Camp Mohawk.

            3. Genuine concern for the positive development of children.

          4. ARC Lifeguard Certification with Waterfront Module.

          5. ARC Lifeguard Instructor Certification.

          6. Swim instructor certification.

          7. American Red Cross First Aid and CPR for Professional Rescuer.

          8. High level of personal organization skills.

          9. At least one year experience in organized camping and experience in a supervisory position related to aquatics.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

            1. Provide leadership to Mohawk Aquatic programs including daily instructional programs, content, camper development, instruction, recreational swim management, on site staff training, small craft instructional programs and site management.

            2. Participate as a member of the Mohawk staff team in camp programs and other assigned responsibilities, i.e. Officer of the Day, Unit Coverage, Special Events, Ceremonies, etc.

 

Specific Responsibilities:

            1. Pre-season: work with Waterfront Staff to:

                   A. set up dock system

                   B. prepare beach, flags and buddy boards

                   C. maintain fences

                   D. review lesson plans

                   E. review Risk Management plans

                   F. Conduct lifeguard course with waterfront module

                   G. Conduct CPR classes for Mohawk staff as necessary.

 

            2. Primary responsibility for the health and safety of participants and staff while engaged in Waterfront activities.

            3. Conduct initial Sunday afternoon “swim test” screening of all campers, assign buddy numbers and place campers in appropriate skill level swim classes.

          4. Assign staff as appropriate to instructional roles in swim lessons, synchronized swim classes and small craft classes.

          5. Responsible for “hands-on” supervision of all after-hours utilization of the waterfront by cabin staff, i.e. evening sand castle building contests, cabin outing in row boats, etc.

          6. Train, supervise, evaluate all staff assigned to the Waterfront. Conduct weekly rescue drills as a part of on-going training.

          7. Maintain the Mohawk Waterfront according to applicable American Camping Association standards and State of Connecticut Youth Camp Licensing standards.

          9. Involvement with Unit and “all camp” evening programs as assigned.

          10.Involvement with all camp responsibilities which all staff share on a rotating basis: Officer of the Day assignment, dance chaperone, participation in ceremonies, occasional cabin coverage.

 

Narrative:

This position will have primary responsibility for delivering a high quality, safe experience to aquatics participants and staff. The successful candidate will be expected to manage a diverse program of aquatic activities operating simultaneously through application of organized standards. For example, during Optional Recreation Period (4:00 to 5:00pm) the Waterfront Director will be responsible for assigning and positioning guards  to the docks for Recreational Swim of sixty swimmers while several other staff are assigned to supervise, guard and assist campers enjoy rowing, canoeing, sailing, kayaking and fun-yaking.

The individual in this position will be a full member of the Mohawk staff and involved in all camp activities when time allows.
