The CIT program is for girls ages 16 and 17 wishing to develop leadership, public speaking, teaching, and camp counseling skills.

Counselors in Training at camp

Our Counselor In Training program is designed to provide aspiring counselors, age 16 and 17, with valuable hands-on experience and comprehensive training in teaching and leadership skills.

As a CIT, you will be assigned to various activities where you will learn the art of teaching. Through engaging lectures and classes, we will equip you with the knowledge and techniques needed to create effective lesson plans and develop risk management programs for different activities. These classes will also delve into the study of age group characteristics, helping you understand how to plan age-appropriate activities that cater to each camper's needs.

We believe in fostering leadership potential among our CITs, which is why we offer a range of leadership opportunities. You will have the chance to take charge of planning chapel sessions, organizing special events, coordinating the thrilling triathlon, and leading cabin activities. One of the most rewarding and challenging roles you will experience is providing leadership to your fellow CITs when it's your turn to head a specific project. Moreover, you will gain valuable experience in public speaking as you confidently address an audience of up to 250 people, enthusiastically presenting your Optional Rec program.

In addition to these enriching experiences, our CIT program also emphasizes practical skills that will serve you well in your future counseling endeavors. You will learn essential skills such as fire-building, mastering knots, boating safety, effective games leadership, aquatic training, and general group management techniques.

At Camp Mohawk, we go above and beyond to ensure that our Counselors in Training (CITs) have an exceptional experience filled with exciting activities and unique opportunities. Our CITs get to enjoy the high and low elements on our exhilarating Ropes Course. From conquering challenging obstacles to building trust and teamwork, this experience will push you to new heights both physically and mentally. Additionally, we believe in creating a well-rounded experience for our CITs, which is why we offer scheduled outings to town every two weeks. This gives you the chance to head out of camp and create lasting memories with your fellow CITs. Plus, we understand the importance of downtime, so we ensure that each day includes a dedicated period off for you to relax, recharge, and reflect.

As a CIT at Camp Mohawk, you have access to special additional opportunities that can enhance your skill set and broaden your horizons. You may be assigned the role of a "Cabin CIT," allowing you to develop stronger connections with campers and gain firsthand experience in guiding and mentoring them. Additionally, outstanding CITs may be selected to participate in our certificate program for lifesaving, instruction in CPR and/or First Aid programs. Participation in these programs is based on the recommendation of the CIT Director and not a part of the regular program.

At Camp Mohawk, we are committed to providing our CITs with an exceptional and enriching experience. Apply to partake in this program and embark on a transformative journey of adventure, personal growth, and unique opportunities.

CIT applications are available in the fall for the following summer. The application includes a completed form, video interview and three references.  Applicants are typically notified in January of their acceptance into the program.
