From the Archive: Nathala M. Case
We’ve all seen this small marker on the stone pedestal in the chapel. But who was Nathala Case? And why is this plaque here? Sadly, very little is known of Nathala as she lived only four years, from 1906-1910. So why is she memorialized at Camp Mohawk? The answer lies with her parents, Fredus Moses Case, and her mother Nathala Parsons Merwin Case. Fredus lived most of his life in Windsor, CT and the last six years in Milford, CT. He was a well-respected and prominent citize

Alumni Spotlight: Paula Stewart Iken
As our call begins, Paula Stewart Iken smiles proudly, her Camp Mohawk road sign prominently displayed in the background. From the very first glance, it is clear that Paula is the embodiment of a spirit that lasts a lifetime. Paula began her time at Mohawk in 1981 as a Ute camper. From there, she worked her way up through the units, becoming a CIT in 1985, a junior counselor in 1986, and a full counselor in 1987. During her time at Camp, Paula developed a particular fondness

Patrick's CEO Corner
Spring 2026 There’s a lot happening at Mohawk right now, and even more on the horizon. This off-season has been full of planning, construction, and preparation for a busy summer ahead, while also laying the groundwork for the future of camp. With a full season, waitlists across sessions, and long-term plans taking shape, it’s an exciting time to be part of the Mohawk community. We’ve had a great off-season overall. Along with the work happening on site, we’ve been focused on

Mohawk's Board of Directors
Camp Mohawk doesn’t run itself. The on-site staff is the face of Camp and is responsible for its daily operation and giving campers wonderful summer experiences. But there is also the less visible work involved that helps make Mohawk the joyful experience it is for so many, year after year. Who does that work? Answer: The Board of Directors of YMCA Camp Mohawk. What is the Board, and what is it responsible for? Who makes up the Board? How does one join the Board? How does it

Quirky Camp Packing
Alumni Question of the Quarter: Spring 2026 Is there a smell that immediately makes you think of Camp? Send an e-mail at alumni@campmohawk.org or leave a comment on the Question of the Quarter thread in the Camp Mohawk Alumni Association Facebook group. Last quarter, we asked Alumni to tell us what quirky item they always packed for their summers at Camp. Below are some of the responses we received on the Camp Mohawk Alumni (Litchfield, CT) Facebook page—come join the discus

Confessions of a FOMO Camper
I have a confession: I have FOMO. Even before it was a “thing,” I had it. My mom said that at college, “Sheila never missed a party.” I’m still like that. So of course I went to the Alumni Reunion over Labor Day Weekend in 2025. Saturday afternoon, there is always a happy-hour/mixer/hangout at the Rec Hall where we catch up with friends from far and wide, look at old photos and just visit with each other. Imagine my shock when a fellow alum announced that she was not go

Patrick's CEO Corner
Winter 2025 Winter arrived early at Camp Mohawk this year! The pond froze sooner than expected, the snow settled in quickly, and camp has been looking especially beautiful in its quiet season. While things may appear still on the surface, there’s been a tremendous amount of activity happening behind the scenes. Enrollment for next summer is already off to a strong start, with Sessions 2, 3, and 4 fully waitlisted. That momentum gives me real confidence that we’ll be full agai

In Memoriam: Beth Reasoner
In early September, our community was dealt another heart breaking loss. Mohawk was blessed to have Beth Reasoner as a camper, CIT, counselor, Unit Leader and CIT Director. During her time at Camp, Beth touched the lives of children of all ages and enriched many of us who were lucky to call her friend. When Beth laughed everyone joined in, and she might break out in song anytime the spirit moved her. Beth, or Elizabeth as she sometimes preferred to be called, was a force of n

Alumni Spotlight: Peggy Bailey
Peggy (left) with Laura Stewart Lynch at the most recent alumni reunion. I recently had the pleasure of chatting with Peggy Bailey, a Mohawker whose experiences and memories of her time at camp mirror so many of my own. Peggy began her time at camp in 1970 as an Oscadee camper. After two additional years of being a Senior camper, Peggy then started her time as a CIT. At that time, the CIT program was a two-year experience, during which Counselors in Training lived in “The Lod

Mid-Century Mohawk Memories
Many things at Camp from the 1950s are still recognizable today. The Dining Hall (built in 1950), the Waterfront (though with different docks and no inflatables), and the Staff Lounge (formerly the Infirmary and then the CIT Lodge) existed then. As far back as 1920, there was a camp store, a farewell banquet, songs, stories, and awards. There were even Jawaks, Mohicans (or Mohegans), Utes (or Utees), and Seniors, although Mugwumps and Oscadees came later. (Nick Prout recalls
